Transgender people who are transitioning sometimes have to jump through legal hoops to get the documentation changed to reflect their chosen name and gender. Pennsylvania's laws make it possible but not exactly easy. Many young transgender people are reluctant to take legal steps to get their names changed because they don't want to deal with the hassle, or because they find official acknowledgement of their wrongly-identified gender and old name to be extremely embarrassing, especially in a courtroom.
The legal procedures are cumbersome but manageable - all the more so with the assistance of an informed and sensitive attorney. This CLE program examines the legal processes for name changes and offers step-by-step guidance for assisting clients who wish to change their name and/or gender marker on identity documents and other records.
Join your colleagues for a "nuts and bolts" explanation of the statutory name change process, as well as, the terminology and cultural competence - the tools that will help attorneys to represent clients as they navigate through the process.
This CLE program serves as FREE training for all volunteer attorneys participating in the Legal Name Change Clinic that immediately follows this program.
