Executive Orders At-A-Glance

CLE_Executive Orders At-A-Glance

Hosted by the Young Lawyers Division and the Diversity in the Profession Committee

An executive order is a signed, written, and published directive from the President of the United States that manages operations of the federal government. But what is it and what isn’t it?

Since January 20, 2017, President Trump has enacted 17 executive orders. While these orders have varied in content from succession within the Department of Justice to the review of the Clean Water Rule, the President's two orders concerning immigration have garnered particular interest.

We have watched protesters bring air travel to a halt and the Department of Justice go toe-to-toe with states and universities in federal court over an order's enforceability and constitutionality. But, how many of us really know exactly what an executive order is? They seem to instantaneously become law and, often times, their constitutionality is challenged.

This CLE program serves as a primer on one of the most common "presidential" documents in our modern government, the executive order. Hear Professor Catherine J. Lanctot answer the following questions, and more:

  • What is the source of the president's authority to unilaterally enact such powerful orders?
  • How have these orders been used by prior presidents?
  • What's Legal?
  • Where and how can these orders be challenged?

Join the Young Lawyers Division and the Diversity in the Profession Committee for an informative lunchtime program and gain an understanding of executive orders.
