Need an Ethics credit? Attorney Ethics Found in Golf and Tennis

CLE - Video_Attorney Ethics Found in Golf and Tennis

This video CLE ethics hour focuses on applying valuable ethical lessons from golf and tennis to the practice of law (and vice versa).

Ethical and principled conduct is a foundational aspect of practicing law, as well as competing in the sports of golf and tennis. Both golf and tennis are played according to strict rules for fairness, just as in legal advocacy. Individuals are expected to self-regulate their actions and conform to ethical expectations, with disciplinary consequences for violations.

Attorney professionals are guided by the Rules of Professional Conduct and Pennsylvania Code of Civility to maintain the integrity of the profession. Our faculty will highlight the Preamble, Scope, and the following rules: 1.1, 1.3, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 3.1, 3.3, 3.4, 8.1 – 8.5.

Topics to be presented include:
- The importance of preparation and professionalism
- Following the accepted rules, including asking for situational relief from standard procedures
- Appropriately seeking to improve the rules and strengthen the profession or sport
- The role of zealous advocacy and competition, candor and truthfulness, fairness to opposing parties, and maintaining the integrity of the profession or sport
- Handling conflicts of interest
- Circumstances involving misconduct and disciplinary action
