TODAY - From Criminal Conviction to Civil Nightmare

CLE -From Criminal Conviction to Civil Nightmare

Hosted by the Criminal Justice Section

We are currently living in era of a self-described, "law and order" President and mass incarceration with the "war on drugs" as a significant byproduct. We are witnessing significant casualties from this "war" and not just the incarcerated defendant who is forced to serve jail time but his/her family and loved ones as well. The punishment continues even after the defendant is released from prison because of the stigma of a conviction. Add to this, immigration legislation forcing entire communities into a panic and threatening the stability of families, work forces, education entities and more.

This timely and practical CLE program breaks down the civil consequences of a criminal conviction and analyzes the devastatingly negative impact these consequences can have on your client (and his or her family).

The panelists examine remedies to counteract any potential negative consequences for people released from prison. Attendees will learn about reentry efforts and programs in our community.

This presentation will provide updates on substantive changes to the Commonwealth's expungement laws and the effect convictions will have on current hot-button issues affecting your clients, such as:

  • immigration status
  • welfare
  • housing
  • child custody
  • disability
  • professional licensing
  • and more

Join your colleagues and receive guidance to help you better advocate for clients with these unique issues.
