Forensics for the Criminal Practitioner CLE Jan. 13
The Criminal Justice Section will present the CLE program "Forensics for the Criminal Practitioner" on Thursday, Jan. 13.
Forensic science is taking on a greater and greater role in today's criminal courts. This brand-new CLE program is designed for attorneys with differing levels of experience on both the prosecution and defense side. Everyone will receive a "crash course" on the basics of forensic evidence that should be a foundation for every criminal defense attorney. You will also learn what is legitimate science on the many TV shows featuring crime scene investigation and what is an exaggeration or "artistic license" for entertainment purposes.
Panelists include Major Carl A. Leisinger III (Ret.); Patricia Roussel, RN, Sexual Assault Program director, Temple University Episcopal Hospital; Charles J. Walsh (Ret.), Forensic Consulting; and Arthur W. Young, forensic biologist, NMS Labs. The course planner is Troy H. Wilson.

Tax Section to Train VITA Tax Preparers Jan. 13
The Tax Section is providing the opportunity for attorneys to be trained as VITA tax return preparers and to greatly assist in the lives of low-income Philadelphians.
It is estimated that each volunteer can bring in more than $60,000 in tax refunds. For people making $20,000 a year, that's huge!
The training will be held Thursday, Jan. 13 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the offices of Pepper Hamilton LLP, 18th and Arch streets, 29th Floor Training Room. There is limited space in the computer lab. More slots are available for those who can bring a PC with Internet Explorer 7 or above.
Three CLE credits are available at this free program. Enrollment is limited because of the size of the computer lab, so please sign up as early as possible. Please, don't take a space just because you need CLE. Please sign up if you are willing to commit to volunteer time in January - April to prepare the returns.

Workers' Comp CLE Jan. 14
The Workers' Compensation Section will present the CLE program "The City Labyrinth Part II: The Journey Through the City's Workers' Compensation Benefits System Continues" on Friday, Jan. 14.
Featured speakers include Hillary S. Cornell and W. Michael Mulvey. The course will provide an overview of the various disability programs available to the City of Philadelphia employees including Workers' Compensation benefits, Heart and Lung Act benefits, the Civil Service Regulation 32 benefits, as well as service connected disability pension benefits.
The program has been approved for 1 substantive CLE credit. Participants wishing to receive the CLE credit will be required to pay a fee of $25 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for more than five years and $20 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for less than five years. Business Law Section Annual Reception Jan. 25
The Business Law Section is pleased to announce the following 2010 annual award recipients. These awards will be presented at the Section's Annual Reception on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011 at the Westin Hotel, 99 S. 17th St.
Past Bar Chancellor and 2001 Business Law Section Committee Chair of the Year, Jane Leslie Dalton, will receive the Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award. Replansky, a former Business Law Section Chair, passed away in 1994 at the age of 51 and was among the Bar's most esteemed and beloved members. In 1997, the Section established the Award in recognition of his career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Dalton, through her years of accomplishments and service, continues the line of award recipients who exemplify the abilities and qualities that honor Dennis Replansky's memory, and whose lives are exemplars to other lawyers.
The 2010 Chair of the Year is Graham R. Laub, chair of both the Mergers & Acquisitions Committee and the Securities Regulation Committee. His commitment, leadership and industry are deeply appreciated by the Section and by those who have directly benefited from the many programs offered by those committees.
The 2010 Committee of the Year is the Antitrust Committee, chaired by Gerard A. Dever. The Committee has put on a series of fascinating and well-attended seminars that are a genuine boon to the antitrust bar. The Section is enriched by such an active and productive committee.

Behind the Scenes of the Marian Anderson Museum Jan. 26
Join the Philadelphia Bar Academy for a special curated tour of the 19th century home of America's greatest contralto singer of the 20th century, Marian Anderson, on Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This unique wine-and-cheese event will feature a live performance by a Marian Anderson Fellow. The Marian Anderson Residence Museum has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The event is co-sponsored by the Association's Minorities in the Profession Committee.
Anderson became an important figure in the struggle for African-American artists to overcome racial prejudice in the United States during the mid-20th century. The Marian Anderson Residence Museum is located at 762 South Marian Anderson Way (South Martin Street - between 19th and 20th and Fitzwater and Catherine streets). The cost is $15 per person. CLE Examines Impact of Midterm Elections

Panelists include John Heilemann, national political correspondent and columnist for New York magazine. He is an award-winning journalist and coauthor of Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime; Lanny J. Davis, of Lanny J. Davis & Associates, who was special counsel to President Clinton and is a regular television commentator and political legal analyst for many of the major news outlets; and Benjamin L. Ginsberg, of Patton Boggs, LLP, who represents numerous political campaigns, candidates, members of Congress, governors, corporations and trade associations who participate in the political process and who served as national counsel to the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign.

Panel on Legal Industry Trends and Future Feb. 1
A panel of prominent legal observers will take part in a discussion focused on legal industry trends and the future of the profession on Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at Philadelphia Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market Street, in the 11th Floor Conference Center. The program, "LAW & REORDER: Legal Industry Trends & the Future of the Profession," is co-sponsored by the Association's Large, Mid-Size, and Solo and Small Firm Management Committees; the Women in the Profession Committee; and the Bar-News Media Committee.
Topics to be discussed at the event include the threat to the billable hour, the rise of new models of legal practice, the morphing of large law firms, the development of talent management strategies, and the creation of work/life and women-friendly employers. The program will also address how lawyers can successfully navigate today's - and tomorrow's - changing legal environment, including an emphasis on productivity, leadership, mentoring, promotion, work/life balance, transition, compensation and networking.
The program will feature an interview by Comcast television's Lynn Doyle with Deborah Epstein Henry, author of "LAW & REORDER: Legal Industry Solutions for Restructure, Retention, Promotion & Work/Life Balance" (ABA, 2010). Henry is the founder of Flex-Time Lawyers LLC. Following the interview, Doyle will moderate a panel discussion with Henry; Carol Ann Petren, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, CIGNA Corporation; JoAnne A. The Homeless Advocacy Project
(HAP) will present a free pro bono CLE training program for attorneys interested in learning how to handle veterans benefits cases on Wednesday, Jan. 12, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the New Jersey offices of Archer and Greiner, One Centennial Square, 33 E. Euclid Ave., Haddonfield, N.J. The program will be conducted by HAP veterans attorney Michael Taub and is open to current and prospective HAP volunteers. This training meets the three substantive hour CLE requirement to maintain certification with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Attendees will receive three (3) free Pennsylvania substantive CLE credits in exchange for representing a homeless veteran through HAP’s Pro Bono Veterans Project. To register RSVP to Cary E.
