Bar Foundation Seeks Marutani Fellowship Applicants
The Philadelphia Bar Foundation, in partnership with the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania, is seeking applicants for the Judge William M. Marutani Fellowship.
The Fellowship serves to honor the legacy of Judge Marutani, the first Asian-American judge in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a distinguished member of the judiciary who served both the Asian-American community and the community at large for many years. Judge Marutani's exemplary career is a model for students committed to public service.
Stipends are provided to first-year Asian American law students from area law schools to take summer internships with public interest organizations or government agencies (including the judiciary) in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Probate and Trust Law Section Quarterly Meeting March 2
The Probate and Trust Law Section will hold its Quarterly Meeting "2010 and Beyond: The State of the Estate Tax" on Tuesday, March 2.

Business Development Skills Series Starts March 5
The Training Resource Group will present a series of programs to introduce business development skills to attorneys beginning on Friday, March 5.
The program is designed for attorneys who are now expected to develop business for themselves or their firms. Learn these essential skill sets that were never taught in law school.
The sessions will be held in the 11th floor Conference Center of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St., from 12 to 2 p.m. The March 5 session will cover building a network for business development and designing a business plan. The March 12 session will discuss the basics of networking and building a memorable 30-second commercial. On March 19, attendees will learn how to build a stronger network. CNN's John King to Speak at March 17 Quarterly Meeting
John King, most recently host of CNN's "State of the Union with John King," will be the keynote speaker at the Association's Quarterly Meeting and Luncheon
on Wednesday, March 17.
At the event, Immediate-Past Chancellor Sayde J. Ladov will be presented with a gold box, an exact replica of the one presented to Andrew Hamilton for his defense of John Peter Zenger in 1735. The gold box is presented annually to the immediate-past Chancellor and is inscribed with the message "acquired not by money, but by character."

Sandra Day O'Connor Award Nominees Sought
The Women in the Profession Committee is seeking nominations for the 2010 Sandra Day O'Connor Award. Deadline for nominations is Monday, March 22.
The award is conferred annually on a woman attorney who has demonstrated superior legal talent, achieved significant legal accomplishments and has furthered the advancement of women in both the profession and the community. The award presentation will be made during the June Quarterly Meeting.
The committee established the award in 1993 to recognize the important contributions that women attorneys in Philadelphia have made to the legal profession. Click here

Get Admitted to U.S. Supreme Court May 17
The Philadelphia Bar Association will move up to 50 of our members for admission to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court on Monday, May 17. The admission ceremony will be made to the full court sitting in Washington, D.C.
The court's requirements for a group admission ceremony are very comprehensive. To review these requirements and to download the forms for admission please visit the Supreme Court's web site at supremecourtus.gov
. Select the Bar Admissions tab on the left-hand side and this will bring you to the link for the Bar Admissions Form and Bar Admissions Instructions. Please read the instructions carefully. Once you have determined that you are eligible for admission, please print out and complete the Admission Form. The instructions and guidelines are very specific and must be followed scrupulously. Do not fold the application or use staples. Use paper clips only.
Once you have successfully completed the Admission Form, please mail it along with a check made payable to the Philadelphia Bar Association. The cost to attend the ceremony is $225 which includes your application fee and a continental breakfast. Please include an additional $25 if you plan to bring a guest. Per the Supreme Court's rule, each inductee is permitted to bring only one guest. FJD E-Filing Training Session April 22
The First Judicial District training session on electronic filing has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 22.
Electronic filing of all civil matters became mandatory in January 2009. This program will provide in-depth instruction on the use of the electronic filing system. It was designed to allow for the filing of all civil cases and legal document via the Internet from anywhere at any time. The system currently provides attorneys and litigants with unlimited online access to all papers and legal documents filed in their cases.
The faculty for the program includes President Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe, Administrative Judge D. Webster Keogh, Supervising Judge William J. Manfredi, Deputy Court Administrator Charles A. Brehons To Host "Duffy's Cut" Authors
Immaculata University professors Bill Watson, Francis Watson, John H. Ahtes and Earl H. Schandelmeier will discuss their book, The Ghosts of Duffy's Cut
, at the Thursday, Feb. 25 meeting of the Brehon Law Society.
The Ghosts of Duffy's Cut is the story of 57 Irish Catholic immigrants who were brought to Chester County by a fellow Irishman to construct one of the most difficult stretches of American railway, the so-called Duffy's Cut of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Chester County. Within six weeks, all 57 were dead under mysterious circumstances. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly industrializing America, this books tells the story of these men and the mistreatment that claimed their lives. The Duffy's Cut story was the subject of a recent documentary which aired on the Smithsonian Channel.
The program will be held at the Vesper Club, 223 S. Sydenham St., and begins with a networking happy hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by the authors' discussion and a question-and-answer session.
