Justice Todd, Judges Smith, Shapiro at Sept. 12 Mock Trial

Join Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Debra Todd, U.S. Court of Appeals Judge D. Brooks Smith and U.S. District Court Senior Judge Norma Shapiro at a Thursday, Sept. 12 CLE program where they will hear a mock argument and discuss First Amendment issues.

Lawyers who will argue a case involving first amendment rights are Robert L. Byer and Sean R. Sullivan. This program will use a mock appellate argument as a means of discussing the issues that can arise when public high schools attempt to regulate off-campus conduct by students. These issues are the subject of debate and adjudications have resulted in divergent views among various trial and appellate courts. The mock argument will be followed by a general discussion of the issues by the participants. The program is sponsored by the new Education Law Committee, Appellate Courts Committee and Federal Courts Committee and will be moderated by Chancellor Kathleen D. Wilkinson.

The program has been approved for 1 substantive CLE credit. Tax Section CLE Sept. 12

Practice before the IRS includes a wide range of activities, including the rendering of written federal tax advice. Tax practitioners increasingly find themselves worrying about becoming subject to civil penalties imposed by the IRS, as well as the possibility of being subject to criminal violations for interactions with their clients. The updated Circular 230 sets out the standards for attorneys, certified public accountants and others who prepare tax returns or provide tax advice to clients for compensation. This seminar discusses the recent developments, Office of Professional Responsibility enforcement, as it relates to the IRS return preparer penalty program, and the alleged "enhanced" enforcement. WIP School Supply Drive Happy Hour Sept. 12

The Women in the Profession Public Service Task Force will host its annual Pencils and Pinot school supply drive and happy hour on Thursday, Sept. 12 at Ladder 15, 1528 Sansom St.

Donations of school supplies will go directly to the Friends of Chester Arthur elementary school to help make sure the students and the school are ready for the new school year. PAP Pro Bono Award Nominations Due Sept. 17

The Philadelphia Association of Paralegals (PAP) has extended its deadline to Tuesday, Sept. 17 for submitting nominations for PAP's 2013 Pro Bono Award.

The 2013 PAP Pro Bono Award is designed to acknowledge the dedication and motivation of a paralegal who has volunteered his or her time to enhance the delivery of quality, pro bono, legal services to the less fortunate population of Philadelphia. Eligibility requirements (nominee does not need to be a member of PAP; cannot be an employee of a public interest legal organization) and further details about the award are outlined in the attached flyer, which is also available on the PAP web site. The winning paralegal will be honored by a $1,000 donation to a pro bono organization of his or her choice selected from the list on the attached nomination form. The award will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 8 during PAP's 4th Quarterly Luncheon at the Radisson-Warwick Hotel. Nominations should be submitted via email by no later than Wednesday, Sept. 18 to PAP's office at philaparalegals@verizon.net.

Judge Pro Tem Training Session Sept. 18

The Business Litigation Committee and Pennsylvania Bar Institute in association with the Philadelphia Commerce Program will present a judge pro tem training session on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The program will bring together current Judges Pro Tem in the Commerce Case Management Program, and those who seek appointment as Judges Pro Tem in an effort to clarify the court's expectations; discuss ways to improve the process; and participate in training exercises for running a successful mediation, facilitated by a nationally-recognized expert who conducts mediation training for the New York courts.

ACE Committee Annual Meeting, CLE Sept. 26

Conversation with School Superintendent Hite Sept. 30

Join us on Monday, Sept. 30 for a conversation with Dr. William R. Hite Jr., superintendent of The School District of Philadelphia, sponsored by the City Policy Committee and Government and Public Service Lawyers Committee.

Dr. Hite will provide them an overview of the status of the district. He was named superintendent of The School District of Philadelphia on June 29, 2012. His professional experience includes serving at every level - teacher, principal, central office administrator and superintendent. Prior to joining the District, Dr. Hite was Superintendent of Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland, the state's second-largest school district and one of the 25 largest districts nationwide. He also served as the school system's deputy superintendent and interim superintendent. Dr. Hite led major efforts resulting in increased student achievement and significant improvements in teaching, learning and school status.

Ethics, Duties of Serving on Board of Directors Oct. 2

The YLD will present the Live, Lunch and Learn CLE Program "The Professional Ethics and Duties of a Lawyer Serving on a Board of Directors" on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

This CLE seminar focuses on what every attorney who acts as a board member/director or an attorney for a nonprofit board needs to understand about his or her professional and ethical responsibilities. Specifically, the program will address a lawyer's professional duties and the potential conflicts that may arise when lawyers serve on boards of nonprofit organizations, including, understanding the fiduciary duties imposed upon nonprofit directors and whether the dual member/attorney role may compromise the lawyer's independence of professional judgment. Speaker Michael L. Temin will also review ethics opinions involving lawyers serving on boards of nonprofit organizations.

Bar Association Elections Committee Formed

The Philadelphia Bar Association has formed its Elections Committee. Chaired by Immediate-Past Chancellor John E. Savoth, it consists of Jennifer S. Coatsworth, John Encarnacion, Regina M. Foley, Nikki Johnson-Huston, Henri Marcial, Aneesh A. Mehta, Ourania Papademetriou, Scott W. Reid, James A. Rocco III, Eric H. Weitz and Marc J. Zucker. Chancellor Kathleen D. Wilkinson, Chancellor-Elect William P. Fedullo, Vice Chancellor Albert S. Dandridge III and Secretary Sophia Lee serve as ex-officio members.

Offices for which candidates are being solicited are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and five seats on the Board of Governors. Each Board seat carries a three-year term.

Association members may become candidates for any of these offices by filing with the secretary, at least 60 days prior to the Dec. 10, 2013 annual meeting, nominations in writing which, for candidates of the Board, must be signed by at least 25 members who are entitled to vote; for candidates for Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, shall be signed by at least 35 Members who are entitled to vote; and for candidates for Vice Chancellor, shall be signed by at least 100 members who are entitled to vote.

Board Observer Program Seeks Young Lawyers

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation, in partnership with the Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Delivery of Legal Services Committee of the Philadelphia Bar Association, has developed the Board Observation Program, an initiative that gives young lawyers practicing in Philadelphia the opportunity to learn more about local public interest organizations and to develop leadership skills necessary to serve on the boards of such organizations as well as succeed in their future careers.

Through the program, a young lawyer will be paired with a Philadelphia nonprofit service organization so as to observe that organization's board activities during the one-year program. If you are a young lawyer interested in becoming a Board Observer or if you are a nonprofit organization and would like to express an interest in having an Observer next year, click here.

Philadelphia Bar Foundation Seeks Nominees

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation is accepting nominations for its two annual awards – The Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award and the Pro Bono Award.

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award, originally established by the Apothaker family in honor of Louis D. Apothaker, recognizes a public interest attorney who is dedicating his or her life to promoting equal access to justice for all by working in the nonprofit legal services community. A $2,500 stipend is presented in recognition of excellence in providing direct legal services to the poor and the underprivileged in Philadelphia.

The Pro Bono Award is presented annually to a Philadelphia law firm or corporate legal department that demonstrates outstanding volunteer efforts in providing legal services to those in need. Guidelines and nomination forms can be found at www.philabarfoundation.org.

Join the New Committee on Insurance Practice

The Philadelphia Bar Association has created a new Committee on Insurance Practice for attorneys involved in insurance practice on all sides, such as subrogation, bad faith litigation, and other aspects the practice. The committee was formed with the intention of being as widely inclusive as possible and to partner with other sections and committees of the Association on events and initiatives where appropriate.

"A lot of law firms will be very interested in this, and more attorneys will want to be members of the Philadelphia Bar Association because of this Committee," said Chancellor Kathleen D. Wilkinson.

Volunteers Sought for New Education Law Committee

The Association's new Education Law Committee provides a forum to examine important initiatives affecting education, recent developments in the law and the Bar's role in this area. Our Association has not had an Education Law Committee in many years, and there is no more important time than now to examine the critical issues of access to education, development of our youth, and the intersection of the law at all levels - including pre-K to 12th grade, as well as colleges and universities.

The Committee will also study the expansion of youth courts in Philadelphia and the Bar's role in assisting that effort. City Council has accepted a series of recommendations for setting up youth courts in schools that work in tandem with the juvenile justice system.

Additionally, the Committee will facilitate the Bar's award-winning Advancing Civic Education Program, or ACE, which over the past five years has placed more than 150 volunteer lawyers and judges into 14 public high schools and three elementary schools to provide supplemental civics education, including the fundamental principles of citizenship, democracy and dispute resolution.

The Committee also meets and collaborates with public officials and agencies including the U.S. Department of Education, leveraging the strengths of their offices to help with the Committee's efforts to engage the education bar, and discusses ideas for potential trainings/programs/panels and topics to energize Philadelphia's education attorneys.

L.A. Law's Jill Eikenberry at Sept. 19 Leadership Program

Jill Eikenberry, one of the stars of the long-running television series "L.A. Law" will be the featured speaker at the Thursday, Sept. 19 Chancellor’s Leadership Institute program.

Eikenberry played lawyer Ann Kelsey and earned four Emmy nominations, two Golden Globe nominations and a Golden Globe Award. She played opposite her husband Michael Tucker in the series. She co-produced a one-hour documentary for NBC titled "Destined to Live," which dealt with the emotional aspects of breast cancer, from diagnosis to recovery. She battled the disease in 1986 and was aware of the importance of letting other women know that they were not alone and could recover and lead full and normal lives.

FJD Seeks Pro Bono Award Nominees

The First Judicial District will again host its annual Pro Bono Awards Ceremony and Roll of Honor during National Pro Bono Week. The ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. in the City Hall Law Library.

The FJD is now accepting nominations for the Pro Bono Roll of Honor. To be eligible for the Roll of Honor, an attorney must be in private practice and must have provided pro bono services to a client or client group in a case pending before the FJD Municipal Court or Court of Common Pleas between Oct. 1, 2012 and Sept. 27, 2013.
