Fourteen CLE programs in a variety of practice areas are being planned for the Bench-Bar and Annual Conference. The CLE programs, in which attendees can earn up to eight hours of credit (including the opportunity to earn two ethics credits), will feature judges and some of the city's most well-known practitioners, who will use their expertise and experience to enlighten attendees.
A dramatic re-enactment commemorating the 275th anniversary of Andrew Hamilton's historic 1735 defense of printer John Peter Zenger will be offered for CLE credit as the opening program on Oct. 15. A State of the Court Presentation will also be offered for CLE credit as the closing program on Saturday, Oct. 16. Vice Chancellor John E. Savoth and Board of Governors Vice Chair Regina M. Foley are co-chairs of the 2010 conference.

Elections Committee Formed; Candidates Sought
The Philadelphia Bar Association has formed its Elections Committee, which is chaired by Immediate-Past Chancellor Sayde Joy Ladov and consists of Michael L. Viola, Scott W. Reid, Louis S. Rulli, Lawrence S. Felzer, Albertine Y. DuFrayne, Brandi Brice, Sean R. Sullivan, Jeffrey S. Gross and Jeffrey Campolongo. Chancellor Scott F. Cooper, Chancellor-Elect Rudolph Garcia, Vice Chancellor John E. Savoth and Board of Governors Chair Richard S. Seidel serve as ex-officio members.
Offices for which candidates are being solicited are Vice Chancellor, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and five seats on the Board of Governors. Each Board seat carries a three-year term.
Association members may become candidates for any of these offices by filing with the Secretary, at least 60 days prior to the Dec. 7, 2010 Annual Meeting, nominations in writing which, for candidates of the Board, must be signed by at least 25 members who are entitled to vote; for candidates for Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, shall be signed by at least 35 members who are entitled to vote; and for candidates for Vice Chancellor, shall be signed by at least 100 members who are entitled to vote.

Board Adopts Guidelines to Help Firms Go Green
The Board of Governors has adopted guidelines
that will help law firms go green. The Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative, adopted unanimously Sept. 30, is the culmination of almost a year's work by the Association's Green Ribbon Task Force.
The guidelines are user-friendly suggestions for helping firms go green in a wide range of areas. They are flexible and "not one size fits all," so that firms of all sizes may use some or all of the recommendations. The Association will recognize those firms that meet adopt certain numbers of the guidelines.
The Green Ribbon goals were among Chancellor Scott F. Cooper's primary agenda items for 2010. "Most in this legal community want to go green," Cooper said, "but they are still looking for an easy source for how to do it. The Association stepped in and has now made available these common-sense ideas. They will help our Association and our law firms save time, money and the environment." Environmental issues were showcased in the Summer 2010 edition of The Philadelphia Lawyer magazine.
The Green Ribbon Task Force, co-chaired by Kim R. Jessum and Michael B. Hayes, developed the sustainability initiative to raise awareness amongst the membership of the Association concerning environmental issues and promote the implementation of more environmentally conscious behaviors and practices within law firms and legal offices large and small.
The Board's resolution does two things. First it adopts a list of practical steps for law firms to follow. In other words, a resource for firms to "go green." Second, it calls upon firms to make a voluntary commitment to environmental sustainability, consistent with the size of the law firm and number of employees.
The Green Ribbon Task Force's Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative Work Sheet provides useful suggestions and recommendations for law firms and legal offices to reduce their waste and energy usage through the implementation of environmentally friendly practices. The work sheet is intended to be a dynamic document, incorporating over time additional information, recommendations and suggestions for environmentally friendly behaviors and practices developed both by the Task Force through its own further study and analysis and from member law firms, legal offices and individual lawyers who are committed to making the practice of law more environmentally friendly.
This sustainability initiative includes a voluntary pledge for law firms and legal offices that wish to declare their commitment to a broad set of principles involving the Association's collective obligation to preserve the environment and natural resources.
The Task Force will next engage in community and member outreach to promote the Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative and the Sustainability Initiative Work Sheet to member law firms, legal offices and individual lawyers. The work sheet includes recommended green practices involving energy and lighting, food, paper, pleadings and documents, recycling, transportation and general business practices.
The Task Force is comprised of more than a dozen volunteer members from law firms large and small, in-house counsel offices, and environmental consultants. Current members include Jenimae Almquist, Henry Balikov, Jocelyn Hill, Rachel Kopp, Sophia Lee, Matthew S. Olesh, Desiree Purvenas, Tricia Sadd, Mitchell Swann and Robert Wert.

Public Interest Section Seeks Award Nominees
The Public Interest Section is now accepting nominations for the annual Andrew Hamilton Award. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Oct. 22.
Nominees must be a legal services advocate or public defender employed by, or associated with, an organization whose purpose is to serve persons who cannot afford to pay for legal representation, or be a public-interest lawyer working with a nonprofit organization serving a charitable or public interest purpose.
In addition, nominees must have substantial experience in legal services, indigent defense or public interest law and must currently be employed in one of these capacities. Members of the selection committee will consider such factors as personal vision and commitment; critical nature of the problems addressed by the nominee's advocacy; innovative nature of the nominee's work; outcomes and results achieved through effective advocacy; the difficulty of achievement; and community commitment.

Brennan Award Nominations Being Accepted
Nominations are being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's prestigious Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award. The award will be presented at the Association's Annual Meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at the Hyatt at The Bellevue.
The award recognizes a jurist who adheres to the highest ideals of judicial service. Any member of the state or federal bench, whether active or retired, who has made a significant, positive impact on the quality or administration of justice in Philadelphia is eligible for consideration. Examples of accomplishments worthy of nomination include innovations in court administration, implementation of pioneering case management techniques, assumption of a leadership role in areas affecting the administration of justice, publication of a significant opinion, article, or other scholarly work, or the like.
This year's Brennan Award Committee is chaired by Michael F. Barrett. 5. It is preferred that the recipient be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association not now in public office or directly involved with court operations or any other public service activity.

The award is accompanied by a donation, made on the honoree's behalf, by the firm of Galfand Berger, to Kids Chance. Kids Chance provides college scholarships to the children of injured or deceased workers.

Business Law Section Seeks Replansky Awards
The Business Law Section is seeking nominations from the Philadelphia legal community for the Section's 2010 Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award. The award will be presented at the Section's Annual Reception to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25. The award recipient will receive the privilege of designating the recipient of the Section's annual charitable contribution to a public interest organization.
Award criteria are superior legal talent in the area of business law; unique contributions to and significant achievements within the business law community in the Philadelphia area; a reputation for mentoring young attorneys; significant participation in and contributions to civic and charitable causes in the community; and uniform recognition in the legal community of the candidate's honesty, integrity and professionalism.
Each candidate must be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Business Law Section.
The Section established the award in recognition of Dennis Replansky's career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Replansky was a 51-year-old senior partner at Blank Rome Comisky & McCauley LLP when he died in March 1994. He was a former chair of the Business Law Section.

SEC's Expanded Enforcement Capability Oct. 26
The Securities Regulation Committee will present the CLE "The SEC's New Expanded Enforcement Capability: What You Need to Know Now" on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
The passage of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act marked the beginning of an overhaul of the rules and regulations governing the financial services industry, including a number of provisions that expand the SEC's enforcement capabilities. This session will explore the impact of the SEC's expanded enforcement authority and explain what practitioners need to know when dealing with the Commission. The featured speaker is Richard A. Levan.
The program has been approved for 1 Substantive CLE credit. Pro Bono Road Shows Available Oct. 18-22
To celebrate National Pro Bono Week in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Bar Association's Delivery of Legal Services Committee is pleased to offer interactive "Road Shows" about the pro bono opportunities available in Philadelphia.
All law firms and corporations are invited to participate. Selected public interest legal services agencies will present a 30-minute workshop about how to get involved in pro bono activities that can help our community and help your career.
Road Shows are available at 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 18 through Oct. 22 at your law offices. Participating agencies include the Homeless Advocacy Project, Legal Clinic for the Disabled, Philadelphia VIP, SeniorLAW Center and Support Center for Child Advocates.

Friday, Oct. 22, 12 p.m. Young Lawyers Division Spotlight on Pro Bono
: The Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association will ceremoniously kick off the National Pro Bono Week celebration with a panel of pro bono volunteers discussing how to get involved in pro bono work and balancing this work with professional careers. Bar Association Vice-Chancellor John Savoth will give opening remarks and presenters include Aisha Barbour of Ballard Spahr, Andy Boczkowski of GlaxoSmithKline, Michele L. Purdue-Dean, a solo practitioner, Rebecca Santoro of Hangley Aronchick Segal and Pudlin, and Matt Olesh of Fox Rothschild LLP. The Juvenile Law Center
will hold its 35th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 13, featuring Mara Liasson, national political correspondent, National Public Radio, and recognizing Hangley Aronchick Segal & Pudlin, Horace W. SeniorLAW Center will provide a training course on providing pro bono personal planning counseling through the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW Helpline on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (breakfast and registration begin at 8:30 a.m.), at Duane Morris, 30 S. 17th St. This two-part course will provide attorneys with the option of attending one or both parts. The first hour will train attorneys to provide legal counseling through the Pennsylvania SeniorLAW Helpline and will include an overview on traditional poverty law issues. The second part of the course will train attorneys on how to answer questions about personal planning matters, including wills, living wills and financial and health care powers. Attorneys who attend both parts of the course and agree to handle at least six Helpline calls will be eligible to receive 3 substantive CLE credits (1 CLE credit will be provided to attorneys who attend the first part; 2 CLE credits available for the second part of the course). Philadelphia VIP will host a CLE training program on how to handle a case in the Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Project, the mandatory negotiation program operated by the First Judicial District. The event will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Comcast, One Comcast Center, 45th floor, Room J/K/L. The CLE training program will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Volunteers will receive one free CLE credit for each hour of course work attended (a total of 3.5 free CLE credits are available) in exchange for representing two different clients at one or more mortgage foreclosure conciliation conferences on a continuing basis until the attempted negotiation is resolved, or in exchange for volunteering as an on-call attorney at three different conciliation conference half-day sessions. Philadelphia VIP will host a CLE training program on ethics on Friday, Dec. 3 from 12 to 2:15 p.m. Presented in a lively and interactive format, this training includes a discussion of Rule 6.1: Pro Bono Publico Service, the role of training in ethical representation, malpractice insurance, models for pro bono participation, and ethical considerations for volunteer attorneys. Special considerations in the representation of low-income clients will also be explored. The event will be held at Ballard Spahr LLP, 1735 Market St., 51st Floor. In his 1995 play "Denial," Peter Sagal presents the story of a Jewish civil rights attorney who is asked by the ACLU to defend the rights of a Holocaust denier whose papers have been seized by the federal government for promoting violence. Abby Gersten's "religion" is the law, but her client tests her faith as she learns that justice has its own price. "Denial" explores the dilemma faced by Holocaust survivors and others who seek to make sure the world never for gets when confronted with those who would prove that what they experienced never occurred, and is also an engrossing legal drama that examines the moral and ethical dilemmas inherent in the First Amendment.
