Garcia to Outline 2011 Plans; 7 to Receive Bar Honors

The Philadelphia Bar Association's Annual Meeting Luncheon, featuring inaugural remarks by incoming Chancellor Rudolph Garcia of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 12 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt at The Bellevue, Broad and Walnut streets.

U.S. Magistrate Judges L. Felipe Restrepo and Timothy R. Rice will receive the Association's Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award at the event for their work presiding over the Supervision to Aid Re-entry Program.

Attorneys Mitchell L. Bach, Edward G. Biester III, Gregory H. Mathews, Darryl J. May and Marc J. Sonnenfeld, who worked to make Philadelphia's Commerce Court become a reality, have been named the recipients of the 2010 Wells Fargo Fidelity Award. Bar Association Candidates Forum Today

All members of the Philadelphia Bar Association are invited to attend a Candidates Forum today to hear from candidates seeking offices in the Association's 2010 Annual Election. A complimentary lunch will be provided.

The forum, sponsored by the Association's Elections Committee, will be held today (Thursday, Nov. 18) at 12 p.m. featuring officer candidates and Board of Governors candidates.

Please be advised that Albert S. Dandridge III has withdrawn his candidacy for the office of Vice Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in the Association’s Annual Election to be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7. There being no opposition for the office of Vice Chancellor, a unanimous ballot will be cast for Kathleen D. Wilkinson.

Wilkinson will serve as Vice Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 2011, Chancellor-Elect in 2012, and Chancellor in 2013.

Combating Obstructionism at Deposition Nov. 19

Robert Musante will present the CLE seminar "Combating Obstructionism at Deposition" on Friday, Nov. 19.

Musante is one of the country's foremost teachers of deposition skills. He has taught more than 27,000 lawyers in 37 states and 11 offices of state attorneys general. He has taught and been a featured speaker in advocacy skills at Hastings College of Trial Advocacy and at the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. He has made numerous appearances on national TV and local radio as a trial commentator.

Green Ribbon Tree Planting Nov. 20

The Philadelphia Bar Association will celebrate its Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative by planting trees on the morning of Saturday, November 20. Please join the Green Ribbon Task Force in helping make Philadelphia greener.

We'll be meeting at 22nd and Bainbridge streets at 10 a.m. to plant bare root trees with the Graduate Hospital West Tree Tenders. This will be their fifth neighborhood tree planting in which they will add to the over 120 trees they have already planted in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood of Philadelphia. No experience or heavy lifting is necessary to help. You and your family and friends are all welcome and encouraged to participate. Donations are welcome to help us purchase food and beverages for all volunteers, as well as mulch for the tree pits. Donations of cookies, muffins, other treats or cases of water for volunteers are welcome as well.

Consider lending any tools you may have. We need round-head shovels and square-head shovels (very important); picks; sledgehammers; work gloves; a wheelbarrow; brooms; and hoses and connection to a water supply or water buckets to water trees.

Pathways to Leadership With Women Chancellors Nov. 30

The Women in the Profession Committee will host the five women Chancellors of the Bar Association who will discuss effective leadership skills on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Rules of Evidence Refresher CLE Nov. 30

Professor Jules Epstein of Widener University School of Law will present the annual rules of evidence refresher CLE program at the Tuesday, Nov. 30 meeting of the Criminal Justice Section.

The program has been approved for 1 Substantive CLE credit. Participants wishing to receive the CLE credit will be required to pay a fee of $25 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for more than five years, and $20 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for less than five years. International LL.M. Reception Nov. 30

The International Law Committee will host a reception for international LL.M. students in Philadelphia and present the International Law Committee awards on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention of the Philadelphia Bar Association evaluates the qualifications of persons seeking appointment or election to the Philadelphia Common Pleas and Municipal Courts. Individuals who wish to be considered for appointment or who are considering filing for the 2011 primary election as judicial candidates should contact the Commission on Judicial Selection & Retention c/o Charles J. Klitsch, Esq., the Bar Association's Director of Public and Legal Services, to obtain a Judicial Evaluation Questionnaire, the Commission's Guidelines for Evaluation of Attorney and Judge Candidates and Bylaws of the Philadelphia Bar Association. In order to ensure that each candidate receives a full and fair evaluation, the completed questionnaire must be returned by Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010 to "Judicial Commission" Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market Street, 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107-2911. Public Interest Law Day Dec. 9

The Public Interest Section will present its annual Public Interest Law Day CLE Program and hold its annual Public Interest Section Awards Ceremony and Reception on Thursday, Dec. 9.

The Public Interest Law Day CLE program will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., at the PBI CLE Conference Center, Wanamaker Building, 10th Floor, Suite 1010, Juniper Street entrance. Public Interest Law Day will be followed by the Public Interest Section's Annual Awards Ceremony and Reception at Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market St. The Awards Ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the reception, featuring beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres, and the presentation of the 2010 Andrew Hamilton Award for distinguished public service advocacy. This year, the awards ceremony will also feature the selection winner of the Judge A. Leon Higginbotham Scholarship to subsidize the hiring of a law student for the following summer as well as the presentation of the Section’s third annual Law Student Awards, which recognize a third-year law student from each of the six Philadelphia-area law schools who has demonstrated a strong commitment to public interest work. The Awards Ceremony will also feature the presentation of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation's Shuster Fellowships.

Business Law Section Annual Meeting Dec. 13

The Business Law Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association will hold its Annual Meeting on Monday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m., at The Philadelphia Bar Association Headquarters, 10th Floor Boardroom, 1101 Market St.. The business to be conducted at the Annual Meeting is to elect Section officers and to amend its Bylaws.

The following nominations for Section officers for one-year terms beginning Jan. 1, 2011 will be considered: Barbara Sicalides, Vice Chair; Wanda Flowers, Treasurer; and Michael Ecker, Secretary. The 2010 Vice Chair of the Section, Sandra Jeskie, will automatically become the 2011 Chair of the Section, as provided in Article III, Section 3 of the Bylaws. Rachel Branson is a candidate for a three-year term commencing on Jan. 1, 2011. Section members may submit additional nominations for the above-stated positions no later than Wednesday, Dec. 8 by filing a petition, signed by at least 35 members in good standing with the Section. The Annual Meeting shall also address amendments of the Section's Bylaws to provide that (a) notice of the Annual Meeting under Article V, Section 1, and (b) notice of special meetings under Article V, Section 2, shall be published in the online Philadelphia Bar Reporter and distributed by the Section's listserve at least fifteen (15) days before such meetings, replacing notice by publication in The Legal Intelligencer at least fifteen (15) days before such meetings.

Business Law Section to Present Awards Jan. 25

The Business Law Section is pleased to announce the following 2010 annual award recipients. These awards will be presented at the Section's Annual Reception on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011 at the Westin Hotel, 99 S. 17th St.

Past Bar Chancellor and 2001 Business Law Section Committee Chair of the Year, Jane Leslie Dalton, will receive the Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award. Replansky, a former Business Law Section Chair, passed away in 1994 at the age of 51 and was among the Bar’s most esteemed and beloved members. In 1997, the Section established the Award in recognition of his career as a lawyer and his contributions to legal, civic, religious and other charitable causes. Dalton, through her years of accomplishments and service, continues the line of award recipients who exemplify the abilities and qualities that honor Dennis Replansky's memory, and whose lives are exemplars to other lawyers.

The 2010 Chair of the Year is Graham R. Laub, chair of both the Mergers & Acquisitions Committee and the Securities Regulation Committee. His commitment, leadership and industry are deeply appreciated by the Section and by those who have directly benefited from the many programs offered by those committees.

The 2010 Committee of the Year is the Antitrust Committee, chaired by Gerard A. Dever. The Committee has put on a series of fascinating and well-attended seminars that are a genuine boon to the antitrust bar. The Section is enriched by such an active and productive committee.

Public Interest Training Programs, Events Set

Face to Face Germantown will hold its 18th Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot, featuring a 5-mile run or 1-mile run/walk on Thursday, Nov. 25 at the Northwestern Avenue entrance of Forbidden Drive. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. The 5-mile run begins at 9 a.m.; the 1-mile run/walk begins at 9:05 a.m. Cost is $30 if registered by Nov. 18 and $35 after Nov. 18. Philadelphia VIP will host a CLE training program on ethics on Friday, Dec. 3 from 12 to 2:15 p.m. Presented in a lively and interactive format, this training includes a discussion of Rule 6.1: Pro Bono Publico Service, the role of training in ethical representation, malpractice insurance, models for pro bono participation, and ethical considerations for volunteer attorneys. Special considerations in the representation of low-income clients will also be explored. The event will be held at Ballard Spahr LLP, 1735 Market St., 51st Floor. The Women's Law Project will hold its Annual Philadelphia Party on Friday, Dec. 3 from 5:45 to 8 p.m. at Marketplace Design Center, 2400 Market St., 4th Floor. This event will honor Carol Tracy's 20th year as visionary leader of WLP and will feature music by the String Quartet of the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. At the event, there will be a wine and beer open bar as well as a silent auction and drawing. Children are welcome and will be entertained by balloon magic and face painting. HIAS and Council and Philadelphia VIP will present "Immigration Court Mock Trial Hearing," on Friday, Dec. 10 from 12:30 to 4 p.m., at the Immigration Court, Robert Nix Federal Building, 900 Market St. This event is free and open to volunteers who have attended a prior substantive immigration training course held by HIAS/VIP. FJD Roll of Honor Deadline is Dec. 15

The First Judicial District's 2010 "Roll of Honor" for Pro Bono Service will recognize all attorneys who have provided pro bono services to litigants in the First Judicial District in 2010. The Roll of Honor members, and individual attorneys selected by the judges of each division for "exemplary" pro bono services, will be applauded at a special Pro Bono Publico awards ceremony in City Hall on Monday, Jan. 24. The names of the award winners in each division and Roll of Honor members will also appear on the First Judicial District and Philadelphia Bar Association websites early next year.

Attorneys are encouraged to nominate themselves for the Roll of Honor. To be included on the First Judicial District 2010 Roll of Honor, the attorney:

• Must practice in Philadelphia County and must have provided these services to a client or client group for a case before the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania during the 2010 calendar year;

• Must not be employed by an organization that has, as its primary purpose, the provision of free legal services to the poor;

• Must have (i) provided services to a client or client group that does not have the resources to compensate another attorney for the services, or (ii) organized, implemented or managed an initiative to expand pro bono legal services in the courts.

• The attorney does not receive a fee or have any expectation of receiving a fee for the services.

The Pro Bono Roll of Honor, and the awards for exemplary service in each division of the court, were inaugurated five years ago by the First Judicial District to applaud local attorneys for their outstanding pro bono legal services, and represent the culmination of the Judicial Pro Bono Committee's work throughout the year.

Brandeis Society to Honor Specter at Nov. 30 Hanukkah Party

The Louis D. Brandeis Law Society of Philadelphia will present its Benjamin F. Levy Community Service Award to U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter at its Annual "Latkes and Vodkas" Hanukkah Party on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the new National Museum of American Jewish History, 101 South Independence Mall East.

The event continues until 8 p.m. and features a buffet supper.

Dietary laws will be observed and donations of gift cards will be accepted to Jewish Family and Children's Service of Greater Philadelphia to allow those in need to purchase holiday gifts for their children.

Tickets are $65 for Brandeis Society members and $75 for non-members. Special rates are available for public service attorneys ($30) and law students or young lawyers ($20). A $30 voluntary contribution is requested from members of the judiciary. Those wishing to attend can register online at brandeislawsociety.com or by mail by sending a check payable to Louis D.
