RESOLUTION ENCOURAGING THE PHILADELPHIA BAR ASSOCIATION TO PROVIDE FREE MEMBERSHIP TO LAWYERS WHO HAVE BEEN ADMITTED FOR LESS THAN ONE FULL YEAR WHEREAS
, the Philadelphia Bar Association previously set a goal of 100% membership and involvement in the Bar Association by eligible attorneysWHEREAS
, Section 500(A)(1) of the Bylaws of the Philadelphia Bar Association requires "Regular Members" of the Association who have been admitted to practice less than two full years to pay annual dues in the amount of $72 each year;
WHEREAS, newly admitted lawyers often have significant financial obligations, including a high level of student loans, such that the payment of membership dues impedes many of them from joining the Association;
WHEREAS, waiving the membership dues for recently admitted Philadelphia lawyers will encourage their involvement in the Association and will introduce them to the many member benefits;
WHEREAS, waiving the dues for lawyers admitted less than one full year gives the Association new members who will contribute to the mission and goals;
WHEREAS, new lawyers who become members of the Association are likely to remain dues-paying members of the Association in their second and subsequent years of practice;
WHEREAS, waiving the dues of recently admitted lawyers will induce these lawyers to become active members of the organization and works toward meeting the 100% membership goal.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Governors of the Philadelphia Bar Association supports, for a three-year period, effective January 1, 2005, waiving the first year dues payable for membership in the Philadelphia Bar Association for those lawyers who have been admitted less than one full year.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Association will monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of this dues reduction on the enrollment and retention of members.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this provision expires December 31, 2007 unless renewed by the Board of Governors.
