About Boots on the Ground Community Initiative

Finding inspiration from the advocacy of Bernie Segal and Cecil B. Moore, 2015 Chancellor Albert S. Dandridge III has encouraged the commitment of service to our community that extends beyond pro-bono services, writing checks and serving on boards. The challenges Philadelphia faces as a major United States city, having the highest poverty rate, motivates the Philadelphia Bar Association to partner with leaders of existing community service organizations and find opportunities to enhance our service within Philadelphia through the Boots on the Ground Campaign.

"uKNITe" Community Service Project

Description
Thursday, March 12th at 8:30 a.m.
Philadelphia Bar Association
11th Floor Committee Room South 1101 Market Street
Philadelphia PA, 19107

Calling all crafters (and anyone who would like to give back to the community)! As part of Chancellor Dandridge's Boots on the Ground Community Service Initiative, the Public Interest Section has created "uKNITe', a project centered on the craft of knitting. Recent studies as well as anecdotal evidence point to the health benefits of knitting and other crafts. We would like to bring these benefits to our own community as well as the community beyond the Bar Association. Our preliminary project goals are to set up regular "sit and knit' sessions to create items for donation, encourage knitters to create items on their own, and to identity a community partner where we can teach knitting to an underserved population.

Call to Action

Would you like to help us shape the future of this project? Our first subcommittee meeting is Thursday, March 12th at 8:30 am in the 11th Floor Committee Room South of the Bar Association. All are welcome to attend. Please email Maureen Olives at molives@philalegal.org if you have questions or you are interested in getting involved but cannot make the meeting.

One Day Pledge

Description

The One Day Pledge is built on the idea that one day - 24 hours - a year can make a difference in the lives of others in our community. Law firms of all sizes in Philadelphia are encouraged to participate. That service can take many forms - pro bono legal representation, serving on a board or leadership position in a community organization, or directly volunteering to perform non-legal work for a local charity. The names of all laws firms that accept the One Day Pledge will be posted on the Boots on the Ground web page. At the Chancellor's Roundtable Breakfast in December, Chancellor Dandridge will publicly announce the total number of hours and days that Philadelphia attorneys have devoted to supporting others in the Philadelphia community in 2015.
