Statement of Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano on Police Violence
In light of the tragic gun violence throughout the nation during the past few days, Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano issued the following statement on behalf of the 12,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association.
"We are deeply saddened and disheartened by the gun violence that resulted in the senseless killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Philando Castile in Minneapolis, and Officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith, Brent Thompson and Patrick Zamarripa in Dallas. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends during this difficult time. While protests against police brutality in the black community continue throughout our city and country, related tensions have manifested in increased arrests and polarizing conversations in our society. On the heels of this presidential election, it is clear this country needs to have a serious conversation to collectively get a better understanding of its history and future. The Philadelphia Bar Association will create such a dialog and is planning a town hall event. More information will be shared as soon as it is available."
