Statement of Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano on Unjust Criticism of the Judiciary
In light of some of the recent comments made by a candidate for President of the United States, Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano issued the following statement on behalf of the 12,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association:
"Respect for the rule of law is the cornerstone of our nation's democracy and the independence of the judiciary is essential to appropriately administer justice for all. It is appalling that a presidential candidate would criticize a judge based upon that judge's ethnicity and reveals a true disrespect for our justice system. When a candidate for elected office criticizes a member of the judiciary based on the latter's background, it calls into question that candidate's commitment to our fundamental, constitutional principles. The Philadelphia Bar Association calls on all candidates running for elected office to respect the diversity and independence of the judiciary that makes our nation so strong."
