Statement from Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano on the Passing of Judge Norma L. Shapiro
Gaetan J. Alfano, Chancellor of the 12,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association, today issued the following statement on the passing of Judge Norma L. Shapiro, judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania:
"Judge Shapiro was a trailblazer, mentor and role model. She was an inspiration for generations of lawyers, especially women lawyers, whom she helped to overcome obstacles to their advancement in the profession. In 2013, the Philadelphia Bar Association presented Judge Norma L. Shapiro with the Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award in recognition of her adherence to the highest ideals of judicial service and her significant, positive impact on the quality and administration of justice. In 1993, Judge Shapiro was the first recipient of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Sandra Day O'Connor Award for her openly and visible use of her position and stature in the community to mentor, promote and advance other women lawyers. A legend in our legal community, Judge Shapiro will be deeply missed."
