Statement from Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano on the Killing of Lawyers in Pakistan
In light of the tragic news of the murder of an entire generation of lawyers in Balochistan, Pakistan, Gaetan J. Alfano, Chancellor of the 12,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association, today issued the following statement:
"The Philadelphia Bar Association joins with the American Bar Association and legal communities from around the world who have condemned the terrorist attack against attorneys in Balochistan, Pakistan, where an entire generation of lawyers was strategically targeted and killed.
This cowardly action was also an attack on the rule of law, which unfortunately is not new to Pakistan's legal community. In 2007, the Philadelphia Bar Association passed a resolution on Pakistan, after an indefinite state of emergency was imposed by then Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, a time when Pakistan's Supreme Court justices and thousands of lawyers, judges and civil leaders were arrested.
With deep sympathy, our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of all of the victims and those who are mourning their loss."
