Statement of Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano on the Passing of Retired U.S. District Court Judge Edmund V. Ludwig
Gaetan J. Alfano, Chancellor of the 12,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association, today issued the following statement on the passing of Judge Edmund V. Ludwig, retired judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania:
"Judge Ludwig was an extraordinarily kind and considerate jurist who served as a guiding light for generations of lawyers, law students, juvenile justice professionals and mental health professionals. His work as an attorney, jurist and educator over a period spanning more than 60 years exemplified fairness, compassion, and a devotion to the law and the community. His life reminds us that we must be involved in our neighborhoods, our profession and our world. Judge Ludwig received the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Justice William J. Brennan Jr. Distinguished Jurist Award in 2005 in recognition of his adherence to the highest ideals of judicial service and significant, positive impact on the quality and administration of justice. Our legal community is diminished by his passing."
