Bar Association Names Naomi K. McLaurin to Head Office of Diversity
The Philadelphia Bar Association has named Naomi K. McLaurin as its new Director of Diversity. In her role, McLaurin will be responsible for leading the 12,000-member Association's Office of Diversity.
The Office of Diversity strives to ensure greater opportunities for the inclusion of diverse attorneys in the legal profession. The Director of Diversity has programming, management and administrative responsibilities, and reports to Association Executive Director Kenneth Shear.
"We are delighted to welcome Naomi McLaurin as the Director of Diversity for the Philadelphia Bar Association," Shear said. "This position serves as a unifying agent among Philadelphia's many dynamic minority, LGBT and specialty bar associations and as a key resource to law firms and legal departments that have or seek to develop diversity and inclusion programs, as well as our own sections and committees. Naomi's vast experience and national reputation as a diversity leader in both the non-profit and for-profit arena, coupled with her background as an attorney, lends itself well to this position."
"I look forward to working with the leaders of the Philadelphia Bar Association, city law firms, legal departments, affinity bar associations and public agencies to enhance the Association’s role as a leader in promoting diversity and inclusion, and to serve as a resource to individuals in the Philadelphia legal community who wish to advance their diversity efforts," McLaurin said. "Of course, collaborations with national, regional and other local bar associations are critical to the overall goal of increasing diversity in the legal profession."
Prior to joining the Philadelphia Bar Association, McLaurin served as a Diversity Consultant in Atlanta, GA, where she advised clients on diversity initiatives and best practices, educational programming, mentoring programs, and professional and business development. She formerly served as Managing Director, Southeast Region, and Vice President & Corporate Secretary for the Minority Corporate Counsel Association in Atlanta, where she opened the first regional office for the national non-profit corporation dedicated to the recruitment, retention and advancement of women, LGBT and minority attorneys. She has also served as Executive Director and Co-Founder of the Atlanta Legal Diversity Consortium, Inc.; as Dean of Career Services at Emory University School of Law; and as Assistant Director of the Office of Career Services specializing in diversity at Georgetown University Law Center. She was an associate with Proskauer Rose in New York and with two minority-owned Washington, DC firms, and a contract/staff attorney with Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.
McLaurin is a graduate of North Carolina Central University (B.A., 1982) and Brooklyn Law School (J.D., 1989).
A native of Fayetteville, NC, McLaurin resides in Center City, Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Bar Association's Office of Diversity partners with hiring partners and managers at Philadelphia law firms, legal departments, and public agencies to develop educational and community outreach activities. In doing so, the Office guides, supports and leads the diversity efforts for the entire Association, including the Board of Governors, the Association's sections, divisions, committees, tasks forces and external efforts.
The Office also acts as a resource for local affinity bar associations, attorneys, law firms and law students who seek support advancing diversity. The Director of Diversity is tasked with providing the expertise, vision, knowledge and leadership in advancing the goals of the Association and of the Office of Diversity, and works strategically at all levels to encourage diversity within the greater Philadelphia legal community.
