Statement from Chancellor Gaetan J. Alfano on Police-Involved Shooting Policies
In response to the recent news announced by the Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams regarding the implementation of new protocols for cases involving police shootings, Gaetan J. Alfano, Chancellor of the 12,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association, today issued the following statement:
"With all of the tension regarding gun violence, the Philadelphia Bar Association respectfully acknowledges Seth Williams' new policy, which ensures increased public transparency and accountability when an officer discharges his or her weapon. The Association still supports Senate Bill 400, sponsored by Sen. Art Haywood, calling for the appointment of independent prosecutors during deadly force incidents. The addition of Williams' new protocols will provide a level of transparency that is much needed when reviewing these investigations. We believe these policies are positive improvements to restore trust among law enforcement and the community."
