WHEREAS, the Philadelphia Bar Association understands that ours is a finite world with finite natural resources and that the preservation of our environment for future generations is a responsibility that we all share; and
WHEREAS, the Philadelphia Bar Association is committed to protecting the environment and our natural resources; and
WHEREAS, the Philadelphia Bar Association is committed to promoting awareness within the profession concerning the impact of our professional activities on the environment; and
WHEREAS, the Philadelphia Bar Association understands that reducing waste and promoting environmentally-conscious behavior and practices is also fiscally responsible and that green business initiatives help fuel economic opportunities for growth in our Philadelphia region and around the world; and
WHEREAS, in 2010 the Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association created the Green Ribbon Task force (the “Task Force”) and broadly charged the Task Force to study, report and recommend action to the Philadelphia Bar Association on environmental issues; and
WHEREAS, the Task Force, comprised of more than a dozen volunteer members from law firms large and small, in-house counsel offices, and environmental consultants, has since developed a Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative designed at once to raise awareness amongst the membership of the Association concerning environmental issues and promote the implementation of more environmentally-conscious behaviors and practices within law firms and legal offices large and small; and
WHEREAS, the Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative includes a voluntary pledge for law firms and legal offices that wish to declare their commitment to a broad set of principles involving our collective obligation to preserve the environment and our natural resources; and
WHEREAS, the Task Force has also prepared Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative Work Sheet which is designed to provide useful suggestions and recommendations for law firms and legal offices to reduce their waste and energy-usage through the implementation of environmentally-friendly practices; and
WHEREAS, the Task Force intends to promote the Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative and the Sustainability Initiative Work Sheet to member law firms, legal offices and individual lawyers; and
WHEREAS, the Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative Work Sheet is intended to be a dynamic document, incorporating over time additional information, recommendations and suggestions for environmentally-friendly behaviors and practices developed both by the Task Force through its own further study and analysis and from member law firms, legal offices and individual lawyers who are committed to making the practice of law more environmentally-friendly.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED THAT the Board of Governors endorses the attached 2010 Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative Pledge and Work Sheet.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Chancellor and the Green Ribbon Task Force are authorized to publicize and distribute the 2010 Green Ribbon Sustainability Initiative Pledge and Work Sheet and to work to promote their adoption.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Green Ribbon Task Force will continue to study environmental issues involving the practice of law and to update the Sustainability Initiative Work Sheet with additional recommendations and suggestions for environmentally-friendly behaviors and practices that can be incorporated by law firms, legal offices, and individual members of the Association.
