Business Law Section Annual Reception Jan. 26

The Business Law Section will hold its Annual Reception on Tuesday, Jan. 26 at the Westin Philadelphia Hotel, 99 S. 17th St., from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The Section will present its annual Dennis H. Replansky Memorial Award to Herman C. Fala, a member of Cozen O'Connor. The Committee of the Year Award will be presented to the Venture Capital and Private Equity Law Committee. Ralph Mauro, chair of the Mergers and Acquisitions Committee, will be presented with Committee Chair of the Year Award.

Young Lawyer Bootcamp Feb. 19

Law students and young attorneys will receive practical and fundamental knowledge on the intricacies of the legal profession at "Young Lawyer Bootcamp: Tactics, Tips and Tricks for Law Students and New Lawyers," an inaugural program presented by the Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association on Friday, Feb. 19 from 12 to 5:30 p.m. at The CLE Conference Center on the 10th floor of the Wanamaker Building.

In five distinct sessions, Philadelphia judges and experienced attorneys will speak on case preparation, selecting a career path, fully benefiting from initial employment, considerations when starting a solo practice, and building networking skills. The program will conclude with a networking happy hour open to all attendees. Young Lawyer Bootcamp features the following courses and panelists:

Business Development Skills Series Starts Jan. 22

The Training Resource Group will present a series of programs to introduce business development skills to attorneys beginning on Friday, Jan. 22.

The program is designed for attorneys who are now expected to develop business for themselves or their firms. Learn these essential skill sets that were never taught in law school.

The sessions will be held in the 11th floor Conference Center of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St., from 12 to 2 p.m. The Jan. 22 session will cover building a network for business development and designing a business plan. The Jan. 29 session will discuss the basics of networking and building a memorable 30-second commercial. On Feb. 12, attendees will learn how to build a stronger network. The Feb. 19 session will provide an introduction to a systematic approach to client development.

YLD Seeks Peretta, Perry Award Nominees

The Young Lawyers Division is now accepting nominations for the F. Sean Peretta Service Award and the Craig M. Perry Service Award, both presented at the upcoming YLD Annual Meeting in early 2010. Deadline for nominations is Friday, Jan. 22.

The F. Sean Peretta Service Award is presented annually to an individual who has devoted substantial time to an innovative or non-traditional program that serves the community. Peretta was a private practitioner who died suddenly at age 31 who was a very involved community activist and a mentor to kids in his home neighborhood. He was viewed as a role model for African-American youth.

The Craig M. Perry Service Award is presented annually to a young lawyer - 37 years old or younger or within the first three years of practice - who has devoted substantial time and energy to community-oriented activities, including, but not limited to, pro bono and charity work. Perry was a member of the YLD Executive Committee who suffered an untimely death. He was very involved in community service and active in student-related and other YLD programs.

Nominations should include the individual's name, address and a brief statement describing his or her qualifications. The deadline for nominations is Friday, Jan. 22. Slutsky on Executive Compensation Jan. 22

Steven Slutsky, a senior consultant in PricewaterhouseCoopers' Human Resource Services practice, will discuss executive compenation at the Friday, Jan. 22 meeting of the Human Resources and Employee Relations Committee.

Long-Term Care Insurance CLE Jan. 28

The Elder Law Committee will present the CLE program "Introduction to Long-Term Care Insurance" at its Thursday, Jan. 28 meeting.

Panelists James Boyd and Gary M. Klazmer will provide an introduction to long-term care insurance, including the advantages of long-term care insurance, who should buy a long-term care policy and the guidelines for evaluating long-term care policies and selecting appropriate benefits.

Lunch Program on Submitting to Editorial Pages Feb. 11

The Association's Bar-News Media Committee will host "How and When to Share Your Opinion with the Press - Submitting to Editorial Pages" on Thursday, Feb. 11.

Members will hear from editorial page editors from several area newspapers. Panelists will include Bernard Dagenais, editor of the Philadelphia Business Journal and Hank Grezlak, associate publisher and editor-in-chief of The Legal Intelligencer. Additional panelists will be announced.

Get Admitted to U.S. Supreme Court May 17

The Philadelphia Bar Association will move up to 50 of our members for admission to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court on Monday, May 17. The admission ceremony will be made to the full court sitting in Washington, D.C.

The court's requirements for a group admission ceremony are very comprehensive. To review these requirements and to download the forms for admission please visit the Supreme Court's web site at supremecourtus.gov. Select the Bar Admissions tab on the left-hand side and this will bring you to the link for the Bar Admissions Form and Bar Admissions Instructions. Please read the instructions carefully. Once you have determined that you are eligible for admission, please print out and complete the Admission Form. The instructions and guidelines are very specific and must be followed scrupulously. Do not fold the application or use staples. Use paper clips only.

Once you have successfully completed the Admission Form, please mail it along with a check made payable to the Philadelphia Bar Association. The cost to attend the ceremony is $225 which includes your application fee and a continental breakfast. Please include an additional $25 if you plan to bring a guest. Per the Supreme Court's rule, each inductee is permitted to bring only one guest. Please send payment to: Attn: Dawn Petit, Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market St., 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107. Do not send the application directly to the Supreme Court.

The event will be on a first-come, first-served basis and all applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2010.

Volunteers Needed for YLD Mentoring Program

The Young Lawyers Division needs volunteers for its mentoring program, an endeavor that seeks to foster the professional development of Philadelphia's future attorneys and simulate the growth, diversity and participation of Philadelphia lawyers in Bar Association activities and the community at large.

Each mentor is assigned to serve as a role model and counselor to one mentee. Mentorship is an obligation and responsibility. Mentors must:

1) Reach out and make initial contact with their mentee;

2) Have one in-person or telephonic meeting with their mentee in advance of the Mentorship Program Event;

3) Have one or more in person meetings with their mentee after the Mentorship Program Event;

4) Remain as a resource to the mentee for the course of the year.

Bar Foundation Seeks Marutani Fellowship Applicants

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation, in partnership with the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Pennsylvania, is seeking applicants for the Judge William M. Marutani Fellowship.

The Fellowship serves to honor the legacy of Judge Marutani, the first Asian-American judge in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a distinguished member of the judiciary who served both the Asian-American community and the community at large for many years. Judge Marutani's exemplary career is a model for students committed to public service.

Stipends are provided to first-year Asian American law students from area law schools to take summer internships with public interest organizations or government agencies (including the judiciary) in the Greater Philadelphia area.

Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Training CLE Jan. 22

Philadelphia VIP will present a video replay of a CLE training program on how to handle a case in the Mortgage Foreclosure Diversion Project, the mandatory negotiation program operated by the First Judicial District, on Friday, Jan. 22.

The CLE training program will be held from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at Pepper Hamilton LLP, 3000 Two Logan Square, 18th and Arch streets, Philadelphia. Volunteers will receive one free CLE credit for each hour of course work attended (a total of three free CLE credits are available) in exchange for representing two different clients from one or more mortgage foreclosure conciliation conferences on a continuing basis until the attempted negotiation is resolved, or in exchange for volunteering as an on-call attorney at three different conciliation conference half-day sessions. Volunteer work must be completed within six months of the training program. Lunch will be provided.

Public Interest Trainings, Programs Set

The Homeless Advocacy Project will conduct a free pro bono training for attorneys interested in learning how to handle veteran's benefits cases on Monday, Feb. 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Dechert LLP, Cira Center, 2929 Arch St. HAP staff attorney Michael Taub, will conduct the training. For attorneys already accredited, this training meets the 3 hour CLE requirement to maintain certification by the Veteran's Administration. For attorneys not yet certified and interested in certification, please contact Michael Taub at mtaub@philalegal.org, or Cary Moritz at cmoritz@philalegal.org before the training. Please note that CLE credits can not be awarded unless certification applications have been submitted and approved by the Veteran's Administration prior to the training. • The Support Center for Child Advocates will present two CLE training programs at the PBI CLE Conference Center, Wanamaker Building, 10th Floor, on Wednesday, Feb. 3. • SeniorLAW Center and Villanova University School of Law will present a pro bono CLE training program to serve older Pennsylvanians on Thursday, Feb. 11. "Personal Planning101: Wills, Living Wills, and Powers of Attorney," will be presented from 6 to 8 p.m., at Villanova University School of Law, 299 Spring Mill Road, Villanova. Participants will learn how to prepare and execute basic personal planning documents, including simple wills, living wills and financial and health care powers of attorney. Attendees will not only learn the relevant Pennsylvania law and pertinent definitions, but also drafting tips and ways to address common misconceptions their clients may have about this area of law. Particular focus will be given to preparing and executing documents for SeniorLAW Center's client base, older Pennsylvanians in need. This training program is free and two (2) CLE credits will be available to those who agree to provide pro bono services to a SeniorLAW Center personal planning client. • HIAS and Council Migration Service of Philadelphia, Support Center for Child Advocates and others are sponsoring a free panel discussion, "A Long Way From Home: Immigrant and Refugee Children Without Parents," on Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 12 to 1 p.m., at Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads, LLP, 123 S. Brandeis Society Law Student Networking Night Jan. 27

Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas President Judge Pamela Pryor Dembe will be the guest speaker when The Brandeis Law Society of Philadelphia holds its Ninth Annual Law Student Networking Night on Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the offices of Fox Rothschild LLP, 2000 Market St.

The event gives Jewish law students from area law schools the opportunity to meet and chat with seasoned attorneys and judges. It includes breakout sessions focusing on specific practice areas as well as a general session, refreshments and socializing. It has proven to be beneficial to countless young lawyers making their way into the Philadelphia legal community.

The Brandeis Law Society welcomes all of its members as well as other lawyers to this free event and advance registration is not necessary. The participation of experienced lawyers and judges is vital to the success of the evening.

'On the Irish Waterfront' Author to Address Brehons

Prof. James T. Fisher of Fordham University, author of On the Irish Waterfront, will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Jan. 28 meeting of the Brehon Law Society.

Prof. Fisher's book tells the story of the gangsters, politicians, longshoremen, union leaders and clergy that inspired the movie classic "On the Waterfront." The meeting will begin with a networking happy hour at 5:30 p.m., followed by Prof. Fisher's discussion and a Q&A session. The meeting will be held at the Vesper Club, 223 S. Volunteer Judges Needed for Mock Trial Competition

Volunteer judges are needed for the 2010 John S. Bradway Philadelphia High School Mock Trial Competition, which is run by Temple University Beasley School of Law and the Young Lawyers Division of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

If you have volunteered in the past, we thank you and hope that you will do so again this year. If you have not yet volunteered for the Mock Trial Competition, we encourage you to and are confident the experience will be rewarding.
