Statement Regarding U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Same-Sex Marriage

Following Friday's ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court holding that the Constitution guarantees a nationwide right to same-sex marriage, the 13,000-member Philadelphia Bar Association issued the following statement:

The Philadelphia Bar Association has had longstanding support in favor of marriage equality. Most recently, in January 2014, its Board of Governors unanimously adopted a resolution supporting marriage equality in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As noted in the resolution, "denying same-sex couples the ability to marry under civil law deprives individuals of equal protection and equal rights under the law…and such deprivations contravene the constitutions of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States of America."

The Philadelphia Bar Association applauds the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges holding that the Fourteenth Amendment requires a State to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-State.

Maxims, Monarchy and Sir Thomas More July 1

Sir Thomas More was the quintessential Renaissance man: lawyer, statesman, philosopher, linguist, raconteur… and Chancellor of England. He was also a prolific writer and author of one of the great books of western civilization, "Utopia."

King Henry VIII beheaded Sir Thomas More for high treason in 1535. "Maxims, Monarchy and Sir Thomas More" sheds light on his last, intensely intimate hour just before his execution. Still wrestling with the moral dilemmas that led him to the block, More jokes, makes up songs, takes jabs at his tormentors and eventually finds peace with his fate.

Featuring Graham Thatcher as Sir Thomas More, this performance underscores More's clash of religious belief with public loyalty. While working through the law, as he perceived it, More tried desperately to protect the status quo of rigid hierarchy and loyalties in a time of violent change. The play opens the way for much discussion of many current questions and issues of concern to lawyers and the legal profession.

This 2 CLE credit program, including ethics, will be held in Philadelphia, on Wednesday, July 1 at PBI Conference Center in the Wanamaker Building, Market and Juniper streets, 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. For additional information or to register, click here.
