2007 Bench-Bar Conference Scholarships Available

Again this year, full scholarships to the 2007 Bench-Bar Conference, to be held September 28-29 at Bally's in Atlantic City, are available by lottery to Association Members who are public interest or government service attorneys.

Scholarship winners will be drawn and announced on Wednesday, September 5th during a reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market Street, 11th Floor Conference Center.

To enter the lottery, please submit your name and organization to Areetha Carter at by Aug. 30, 2007.

Scholarships include one night hotel room at Bally's as well as all conference fees, CLE credits and meals.

Temple President Hart to Speak at Oct. 16 Quarterly

Ann Weaver Hart, the first woman president of Temple University, will offer keynote remarks at the Association's Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007 Quarterly Meeting and Luncheon.

The Women in the Profession Committee will present the Sandra Day O'Connor Award at the event. Tickets to the event, to be held at the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott, 1201 Market St., are $50 and can be ordered online by clicking here. Hart was elected the ninth president of Temple University on May 4, 2006. She previously served as president of the University of New Hampshire and provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Claremont Graduate University, in Claremont, Calif. Her prior appointments include professor of educational leadership, dean of the Graduate School and special assistant to the president at the University of Utah.

She received an M.A. in History and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration, both from the University of Utah. Her research interests include leadership succession and development, work redesign and organizational behavior in educational organizations, and academic freedom and freedom of speech in higher education. Committee to Screen "30 Days" on Aug. 15

The Legal Rights of Children Committee will present a screening of "30 Days" on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 3:30 p.m.

"30 Days" was written, performed and filmed by delinquent teens at The Bridge and produced by Big Picture Alliance. The meeting will be held in the 10th Floor Board Room of Bar Association headquarters, 1101 Market St. Cookies and beverages will be provided.

Discussion on Executive Contracts Aug. 21

Thomas D. Rees and a representative from Right Management will discuss executive contracts at the Tuesday, Aug. 21 meeting of the Labor and Employment Law Committee.

CLE Program on Redistricting Aug. 22

The Montgomery County Bar Association will present the CLE program "Redistricting: Limiting Your Right to Vote" on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at the Villanova Conference Center.

The speakers for the program include Prof. Bruce Cain of the University of California - Berkeley and Montgomery County Legislator Daylin Leach. Cain, the Heller Professor of Political Science, has a national reputation for teaching, writing and consulting to governmental bodies on elections and redistricting. Leach is the sponsor of legislation to reform Pennsylvania's winner-take-all partisan process.

Co-sponsors of the program are the Jewish Social Policy Action Network, the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania and the Committee of Seventy. New Guidelines for Association List Serves

The Bar Association has amended the guidelines for its member list serves. Please take a moment to review the amended rules by clicking here.

Specifically, a new rule has been added regarding referrals. The Association requests that the listserves not be used as a means to obtain referrals to other attorneys in the five-county region. The Association maintains a Lawyer Referral and Information Service for this purpose, which is available to any attorney looking for a referral.

Additionally, members are required to include their name and contact information in their postings, and to maintain a courteous and professional tone at all times.

Shuster Fellowship Applications Being Accepted

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Morris M. Shuster Public Interest Fellowship Program, established in 2003 as a result of a generous donation by Morris M. Shuster to the Bar Foundation. This program is intended to assist public interest lawyers who face large student loan obligations that threaten their ongoing service as public interest attorneys.

To be eligible for the Shuster Fellowships, an applicant must be a full-time lawyer employed at a qualifying organization, who is financially eligible and has completed the requisite number of years of work experience at one or more nonprofit organizations principally involved in the delivery of legal services to clients (regardless of geography).

Bar Foundation Seeks Award Nominees

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation is requesting nominations for the Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award and the Citizens Bank Pro Bono Award. The Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award recognizes attorneys working in the non-profit legal services community.

The Citizens Bank Award recognizes achievement in pro bono legal service, whether by a law firm or by a corporate law department.

These awards will be presented at the Bar Foundation's Andrew Hamilton Gala on Saturday, Nov. 17. Program on Success for Women Sept. 18

The Women in the Profession Committee and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC will host "Successful Interviewing And Beyond: Learning to Effectively Navigate Your Way as a Woman Lawyer to Ensure Success" on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. at The CLE Conference Center on the 10th floor of the Wanamaker Building.

This program will offer in-depth discussions of how women law students and practitioners can develop the necessary skills to succeed and how employers can achieve more diversity in the legal profession. The first panel will discuss how women law students can select a woman-friendly employer and how practitioners and employers can create and ensure more gender diversity. The second panel will share interview tips and information about what employers want. It will also uncover how women practitioners successfully conduct themselves professionally and navigate their way in the profession. A cocktail reception will follow.

The first panel, "The Cheat Sheet: Strategies to Select, Create & Ensure a Woman-Friendly Employer," which is available for one ethics credit of CLE, includes panelists Deborah Epstein Henry (moderator), founder and president, of Flex-Time Lawyers LLC, and of counsel, Schnader, Harrison, Segal & Lewis; Heather Harrington, an associate with Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker, LLP; Linda Dale Hoffa, assistant U.S. attorney, assistant chief, Criminal Division, Eastern District of Pennsylvania; Roberta D. Immigration Court Training CLE Sept. 7

Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center will present the pro bono training program "Defending Your Client in Immigration Court: Practical Do's and Don'ts," on Friday, Sept. 7 at York Immigration Court, 3400 Concord Road, York, Pa.

This seminar will provide hands-on immigration court training to small groups of prospective pro bono representatives emphasizing practice, procedure and advocacy skills, in order to improve the level and quality of representation before the court. Speakers at the training will include an immigration judge as well as other members of the Executive Office for Immigration Review. Through a simulated merits (final) hearing, participants have an opportunity to serve in the role of respondent's counsel, ICE Trial Attorney and respondent witness. Sample case scenarios are prepared and distributed to all participants in advance of the training.

Three CLE credits have been applied for. The training will be provided free of charge in exchange for attorneys agreeing to take a pro bono case referred by PIRC. Cost of the attendance fee for the Pennsylvania CLE Board is not included ($1.50 per CLE credit hour). Nominations Sought for 2007 Wachovia Fidelity Award

Nominations are now being accepted for the Philadelphia Bar Association's 2007 Wachovia Fidelity Award. Nominations should be made in writing. Please include a detailed statement setting forth information and reasons why you are recommending the nominee for this award. The deadline for receipt of nominations is 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12.

The criteria for the award are:

Significant accomplishments in improving the administration of justice (preferably in Philadelphia);

The absence of prior recognition for this work by the Philadelphia Bar Association;

Distinguished service consistently rendered over a considerable period of time or a single outstanding achievement in a particular year. (The fact that this single achievement may have occurred some years ago is not material so long as it has not been recognized.);

The accomplishment must arise from voluntary activities rather than for service rendered as a paid professional; and

It is preferred that the recipient be a member of the Philadelphia Bar Association not now in public office or directly involved with the court operations or any other public service activity.

Workers' Comp Section Seeks Award Nominees

The Association's Workers' Compensation Section will present its 7th annual Martha Hampton Award later this year. This award was named in honor of an attorney who was committed to the practice of workers compensation law. Each year a committee reviews nominations as to the attorney or judge who best exemplifies Martha's unique compassion and dedication to her clients, her professionalism, scholarship and good will with her peers.

It should be noted all members of the bar and bench who practice workers' compensation law are eligible. This is not an award restricted to claimants' attorneys. Past winners have included counsel from both sides of the aisle as well as from the bench.

This year's Award Committee will be chaired by Marc S. Jacobs (a partner with Hampton at Galfand Berger) and the co-chairs of the section from last year, Judge Patricia M. Bachman, Valerie H. Lieberman and Eric L. Segal. In addition to the award, a charitable contribution is made each year to Kids Chance by Galfand Berger, on behalf of the Section. Kids Chance offers scholarships to children who have lost a parent due to a work-related injury.

New City Hall Security Plan Under Way

Security identification cards are now required to access Philadelphia City Hall. Security identification application forms are available at

Attorneys can go to Room 112 near the northeast corner of City Hall Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and fill out an application and have a photo taken for the new badge. The photo and application process takes just 10 minutes. Attorneys must have their Supreme Court lawyer identification card to apply for the security card. Philadelphia Lawyer Magazine Seeks Photo Contest Entries

As our city and our Association continue to reach out to the international community, what strikes you about society's increasingly global worldview? What image captures its influence on Philadelphia and the rest of the world?

The Philadelphia Lawyer 2007 Photo Contest will award a Grand Prize in the form of a $500 Capital Grille gift certificate to the member-submitted photograph that best captures the theme of "Eyes on the World." Honorable mention winners may also be selected at the judges' discretion. The contest is sponsored by The Capital Grille.

Deadline for entries is Friday, Oct. 12, 2007. Photos can be either color or black and white. All submissions will be judged by a panel of professional photographers and all winning photographs will be published in the Winter issue of The Philadelphia Lawyer.

Summer is the perfect time to begin compiling your entries, so remember to take your camera with you on your travels — whether they take you around the world or just around the corner.
