DEADLINE EXTENDED for potential judicial candidates for 2021
Are you a potential judicial candidate for 2021?
If so, we invite you to complete a questionnaire for the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention. We have recently extended the deadline for all candidates to submit materials to Friday, January 22.
The Judicial Commission’s work has been cited as an authoritative source for information on judicial candidates, providing unbiased and fair ratings about candidates’ abilities to serve on the bench. In the 2019 primary elections, three “Highly Recommended” candidates and four “Recommended” candidates won positions on the ballots for judicial races.
How it works: This process allows individuals who are seeking appointment or election to the Philadelphia Common Pleas and Municipal Courts, and to Pennsylvania Appellate Courts if your principal offices or chambers are Philadelphia to have your qualifications evaluated by our independent Commission, which makes recommendations to the voting public for elected offices or to the legislature when confirmation of an appointment is required.
The Commission’s investigation is conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Evaluation of Attorney and Judge Candidates. The Commission rates a candidate as Highly Recommended, Recommended or Not Recommended for the judicial office sought. Any candidate who fails to submit to the Commission’s evaluation process will automatically receive a rating of Not Recommended.
If you wish to be considered for appointment or are filing for the 2021 primary election as a judicial candidate: A candidate for Judge of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and/or Philadelphia Municipal Court should complete a Questionnaire for Lawyer Candidates. A candidate for Judge or Justice of a statewide Appellate Court who has an office or chambers in Philadelphia should complete a Questionnaire for Appellate Court Candidates.
What’s next: To ensure a full and complete evaluation, the completed questionnaire and writing samples must be submitted electronically to the Judicial Commission at email@example.com by Friday, January 22. No materials will be accepted beyond that date.
Thank you for your commitment to creating a more informed electorate.
