Philadelphia Bar Association Honors 2021 Bar Stars

The 2021 awards include recognizing this year’s Bar Champion, Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin.

The Philadelphia Bar Association’s Member Appreciation Week kicked off with an event celebrating the contributions of all members and giving special recognition to this year’s “Bar Stars,” an award created in 2019 to honor members who have gone above and beyond at carrying out the Association’s mission of leadership, education and advocacy.

“Our members are the leaders, organizers and support system that ensure the Association is able to implement initiatives that improve the legal profession and make Philadelphia a better place to live and work,” Chancellor Lauren P. McKenna said. “Their dedication and commitment demonstrates hope – hope for our Association, our profession and our city, during a time when it has been needed most.”

The November 15 gathering at City Winery also included honoring Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin as the 2021 recipient of the Association’s Bar Champion Award. Created in 2020, the Champion of the Bar Award is given annually to a law firm, law department, legal services organization or law school in Philadelphia that has fully supported the Association through 100% membership, leadership roles, member engagement and contribution to the community through public service.

“For more than 15 years, the Philadelphia office of Marshall Dennehey has supported our Association with 100 percent membership,” said Harvey Hurdle, executive director of the Philadelphia Bar Association. “Marshall Dennehey attorneys have also played a significant leadership role on our Board of Governors, Sections and Committees, including this year when we have nine attorneys from the firm serving in 10 different leadership roles.”

Marshall Dennehey President and CEO G. Mark Thompson said the firm was “honored and delighted” to receive the award.

“Our Philadelphia Office Managing Attorney, Butler Buchanan, III, has led by example with his dedication and commitment to the Association and its mission to serve the profession and the public by promoting justice, professional excellence and respect for the rule of law,” Thompson said. “He is involved on so many committees, on so many levels, and our attorneys have followed suit. We thank Buck, our attorneys and certainly the Bar Association, for this wonderful recognition.”

In accepting the award, Buchanan noted that he and other members of the firm get numerous benefits from Bar Association membership.

“It’s a big tent in the Bar Association, it offers a lot for all of us,” he said. “For those early in their careers especially, I encourage you to think about getting active.”

The event also recognized 21 “Bar Stars,” representing each of the Association’s nine Sections, the Young Lawyers Division and the Board of Governors.

“The Philadelphia Bar Association prides itself on providing attorneys with everything they need to achieve their professional goals, and also improving access to justice both here in Philadelphia and statewide,” Hurdle said. “That would be impossible to do without members who give their time as dedicated volunteer leaders and firms like Marshall Dennehey, who recognize the importance of our mission.”
