Join Us for the Philadelphia 2021 Celebration of National Pro Bono Week

The need is greater than ever – learn how you can get involved

Whether you’re new to pro bono work or already involved, join us in participating in the American Bar Association’s annual National Pro Bono Celebration from Oct. 24-31.

Here is a list of events going on in Philadelphia during the week:

  • Support Center for Child Advocates: “How to Handle a Child Abuse Case,” Two-Part Virtual Training Program

    8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, October 26 and Wednesday, October 27 (must attend both virtual sessions)

    Become a child advocate volunteer attorney. Join Child Advocates for this volunteer workshop and learn from dedicated experts in the field of child advocacy about how you can make a difference in the lives of children who have experienced abuse and neglect.

  • SeniorLAW Center: “The Nuts and Bolts of Representing Grandparents Raising Grandchildren,” Virtual Presentation

    10-11 a.m., Tuesday, October 26,

    Join us to learn procedures and practice tips to effectively advocate for grandparents raising grandchildren in custody matters. We will explore the issue of third-party standing and provide practical information on how to prepare and file an action in court. Moreover, we will provide samples of all required documents. The focus will be Philadelphia County; however, we will provide a brief overview regarding the neighboring counties. Attend and receive the knowledge and tools necessary to advocate for these vulnerable grandfamilies. This presentation is FREE to attend.

  • HIAS Pennsylvania: “Introduction to Current Topics in Immigration Law,” Virtual Presentation

    12-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 27

    Join us to learn about three immigration topics that are in the news frequently. We will cover (1) humanitarian parole and refugee resettlement for Afghans; (2) Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, Venezuelans and others; and (3) green card applications for recently arrived refugees.

    Each type of immigration relief will be explained, and experts will describe the work that pro bono attorneys can do for clients in these areas. The presentation will last 90 minutes.

  • HIAS Pennsylvania: “Substantive Training On Asylum Law,” Virtual Presentation

    12-2 p.m., Thursday, October 28

    Join HIAS Pennsylvania to learn about representing clients pursuing claims for asylum. This training is appropriate for new and experienced pro bono attorneys. At this session, experienced immigration law practitioners will teach attendees about the substantive and procedural law that applies to asylum and related claims.

  • Philadelphia VIP: “How Volunteer Attorneys Empower Our Community,” Virtual Presentation

    12-1 p.m., Thursday, October 28

    One in four of our Philadelphia neighbors lives in poverty. Whether you’re a veteran volunteer, you’re new to VIP, or you’ve never volunteered at all, this session will orient you to VIP’s mission, educate you on the challenges faced by our neighbors living in poverty, and show you how attorneys can have a life-changing impact by volunteering with VIP.
