Philadelphia Bar Association Remembers Longtime Member Hon. Bruce W. Kauffman
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor, Lauren P. McKenna released the following tribute to the Honorable Bruce W. Kauffman, a retired Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice and judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, who died on November 29. Kauffman was a longtime member of the Association’s Federal Courts Committee and a generous supporter and former president of the Association’s charitable arm, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation.
“We were saddened to hear of the passing of Judge Kauffman, who is among the Philadelphia Bar Association members being honored at our upcoming Annual Meeting for 60 years as part our community,” McKenna said. “Throughout his years as a practicing attorney, as a Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice and as a United States District Court judge, Judge Kauffman was a strong advocate for civility and respect among fellow attorneys and judges both in and outside of the courtroom. He was also a steadfast supporter of an independent, nonpartisan judiciary, something our Association has long sought to preserve.
“In 2011, Judge Kauffman was chosen to speak on behalf of inductees into the Association’s ‘50 Year Club’. In his speech, he noted that lawyers ‘can be zealous and successful advocates without being mean-spirited,’” McKenna continued, “Judge Kauffman’s long and distinguished career as a leader in our community is a testament to the importance of that ideal.”
