To get more work — be incredible in and outside of your job by Stacy West Clark
Hi Lawyers! This month's marketing tip is:
To get more work — be incredible in and outside of your job.
I wanted to title this article: All I ever needed to learn about marketing I learned from my kid's softball coach and for good reason. I have an 11-year old daughter who is crazy for softball (Little League) and this year she got recruited by Andy Youman, a coach in our township, to play on his team.
I did not know Andy, but I entrusted my daughter's care and softball education to him for about 8 weeks. It was an absolutely terrific season. The team won districts and had a great time at Sectionals. The girls learned something at each and every practice and game and Coach Youman was incredibly motivating, educational and enthusiastic — no matter the results of their efforts-- more so than any coach I can remember my daughter having. She came back from practices saying: Mom I really learned something today. She never came home from a "bad" practice or a "loss" feeling bad about herself or the team — Never.
I credit Coach Youman with all of this. He made a huge impression in my daughter's and thus our lives. When I finally asked what he did professionally, I was told he was a personal injury attorney with Kline Specter.
I checked his bio and read his firm's website and learned he was one of the area's top personal injury lawyers for catastrophic injury and medical malpractice matters.
There are a lot of great lawyers out there that do this kind of work in the City. But...
There is NO DOUBT that should I ever need a personal injury attorney — or need to refer someone to a great one — that I would not hesitate for one iota to refer them to Andy Youman. I have not seen him in action in a legal arena — but I have seen him in the personal arena — which matters just as much to me as when lawyers of equal professional credentials are all spread out before me.
Why?
Because he has demonstrated himself to be an exceptional person to me in a setting that really counts — one that involves my child and our family's life.
The morale of this story of my daughter's 2008 girls softball tournament team is twofold.
1) Handle yourself in an exemplary manner — as Coach Youman has — when you are not at work, and,
2) Participate in "extra-legal activities" where you can let your passions and great character show.
Now it is your turn. Participate in something you are passionate about, make contacts and show what a great person — and thus lawyer — you are. You might just get hired because of it.
As I like to say: get set, get up and get GOING! And a toast to Coach Youman.
