July 24 Chancellor's Forum on Unaccompanied Immigrant MinorsThe number of children entering the U.S. without their parents has grown steadily over the last four years, increasing 300 percent since 2011. It is predicted that 90,000 immigrant children will cross the border without their parents this year. Join us at a Thursday, July 24 Chancellor's Forum for the discussion "Unaccompanied Immigrant Minors: The Humanitarian Crisis Not Just at Our Borders." These children are fleeing for a complicated set of reasons including gang violence and domestic violence, lack of governmental protections in their home countries and long time separation from family members, some in temporary lawful immigration status in the U.S. A number of children reside in the Philadelphia region. This humanitarian crisis presents important challenges for the legal community as the children have immigration and family law matters that will require understanding of the unique issues facing these children in family/dependency courts and commitment of pro bono resources. The forum will provide an opportunity to learn more about the issue.
