YLD Networking Happy Hour at Pagano's Tonight

The YLD will hold a Networking Happy Hour on Tuesday, July 23 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Pagano's Market & Bar, 2 Commerce Square, 2001 Market St. Food and drink specials will be featured and the first 50 people to arrive will receive a drink ticket. Registration is not required. The Networking Happy Hour is sponsored by Scarab Consulting.

Protections Against Eviction for Victims of Partner Violence

Over the past 30 years, federal, state, and local legislatures have all passed statutes granting domestic and sexual violence victims various housing protections. In Philadelphia, the federal Fair Housing Act, the Violence Against Women Act, Philadelphia's Fair Practices Ordinance, and Philadelphia's Fair Housing Ordinance protect domestic violence victims' housing rights and prohibit landlords from evicting domestic and sexual violence victims under certain circumstances. These fair housing laws not only prevent unnecessary evictions but also give victims protections from discrimination as they seek new housing.

The Real Property Section CLE program "Protections Against Eviction for Victims of Intimate Partner Violence" on Tuesday, July 23 will provide an overview of the housing rights and responsibilities that apply to landlords and to domestic and sexual violence victims.

The program has been approved for 1 substantive CLE credit. Participants wishing to receive the CLE credit will be required to pay a fee of $25 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for more than five years and $20 for members of the Philadelphia Bar Association admitted for less than five years. Finding Common Ground Among Generations in Workplace July 29

With the Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y working side by side, some unique communication challenges have emerged in the workplace. At the Monday, July 29 Chancellor's Leadership Institute program "Four Generations in the Workplace: Finding Common Ground," we will explore the differences of what the demographic groups want, how tensions arise and how to find common ground.

We will also delve into the unique issues that impact women in supporting each other. Attendees will leave the program inspired by a better understanding and respect for generational differences and commonalities. They will also gain tools to improve communication and teambuilding across generational lines.

Ohlbaum on Evidence-Advocacy July 25

Professor Edward D. Ohlbaum will dissect, discuss and demonstrate how evidence and advocacy interface at a Thursday, July 25 CLE program. The relationship between evidence and trial advocacy enables you, as an advocate, to demonstrate how an evidentiary principle makes your presentation more believable. It also permits you to make an opponent pay a price for having abused or disregarded the relationship.

Because the law of evidence is analytically integrated with the law of trial advocacy, the respective foundations of evidentiary rules provide the keys to persuasion. Trial lawyers who articulate these evidentiary principles in their questions and speeches become more persuasive advocates simply because many of the principles on which the rules of evidence are based are the same principles that govern persuasive courtroom performance. The YLD will hold a Networking Happy Hour and School Supply Drive at Chima Brazilian Steakhouse, 1901 John F. Kennedy Blvd., on Wednesday, Aug. 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The YLD is partnering this year with the Pennsylvania Bar Association Minority Bar Community Outreach Committee in a School Supply Drive in order to collect donations for students in economically challenged areas of the city. We need your help! We will be collecting donations at Chima. We are looking for donations of backpacks, notebook paper, pens/pencils/highlighters, notebooks, composition books, rulers, dictionaries, folders, binders, pencil cases and anything else you think might be useful. In addition to the Chima collection, we will also be setting up donation sites at firms throughout the city.
